District Board Meeting 18 February 2010

I attended the district board meeting tonight…2 hours and change this time. I’ll post the recording soon, along with commentary, but some highlights:

  • The district has apparently changed their mind about having personal recorders on the table during board meetings…stating they “will not be responsible” for them.  I stated that I absolve them of any responsibility–if it gets broken, it gets broken.  Debra Wright put on her best “off with his head” face and stated it needs to be removed (well, they didn’t like me recording and posting anyway — see bullet 4 of this post).  If looks could kill, I’d have been vaporized in a nanosecond…see for yourself when I post the video of the meeting.
    • I removed the recorder, rather than fight the issue…so the sound this time may be a little weak.  Tonight I have asked the district to provide me a letter in writing stating their justification for this action, and citing either approved district policy or Colorado Revised Statute; we’ll see what they say.  In any case, I’ll bring my boom microphone next time :)
  • Eddie Avedekian made an impassioned statement about me posting his address and a Google map link in this post.  I think Bruce Willis said it best:

Welcome to the party, pal!”

You can’t expect to remain anonymous when you sign over enforcement rights, which are then used against your neighbors–especially when your assignment is public record (there’s that “microscope” and “transparency” thing again).  Oh, and the map?  To illustrate just how ludicrous this assignment thing is;  you don’t have to live near someone to have an enforcement action brought under your assignment.

  • Lots of discussion about covenants…Larry Bishop laid out 4 possible options, which led to great discussion among the audience.  Two of the board members admitted that the other filings “get no benefit” from covenant enforcement in filings 1-10.
  • The board awarded Larry Bishop a $5,000 “incentive” (bonus) as part of his performance evaluation–that should help pay off his court costs.

Lots more stuff…but I’m tired, so I’ll finish later….but here are some stills (click on the image to zoom):

It occurred to me that some of you may not know who your district board members are…so from left to right in the photos above are Marge Vaga, Debra Wright, Jan Pizzi, Keith Moulton, and Jennifer Barber.

Update 19 Feb 2010

OK, I couldn’t help myself; apologies to Berkeley Breathed (click on the image to enlarge).

Click here for the original comic (which is also somehow oddly appropriate)

Also, the recordings of the district board meeting are now online — two of them;  one small one (click here), and one really large one (click here – but it might take a while to download).

The recording of the town hall meeting is also online — click here to get to that.

In answer to a question, no, I don’t think the board decided to “remove” the tape recorders to hide anything, or to try and ensure a bad recording.  I think it had something to do with the accusation that Jan Pizzi broke Ron Pace’s recorder at the last board meeting (see this post, comments #17 and #19).

  • That’s funny honey! I got a great laugh out of that one!

  • gimmie a break

I will address the tape recorder matter, Jan broke my external mike and the cost was 24.00.
Jan told the investigator a different story. The issue here is no one has a right to touch anyone’s personal property. Board members do not have special rights.

I can not answer any questions on the criminal matter. I have a trial and I will let the recordings do the talking. Several will be subpoenaed and that is what is making them mad at me.

I will not address any issue that is currently being handled in court. I have been advised not to discuss any legal matter without my lawyer present.

I will not engage anyone whose express purpose is to put a negative light on my campaign.

Dave is just the latest to come under fire.

Filing 11 is being double charged for covenants. That should piss you off. What should also upset you is the amount of energy being expended to thwart any effort to correct this issue.
Big government is still big. I may not agree on all subject matters but having a real discussion is what is lacking.
Everyone is under the impression that I lack an education. This is not the case.
I see what I write and because of that My writings on occasions are wrong.
I don’t have to explain anything to anyone. I have been under fire since 2007. All this is being done to prevent me from ever getting on the board. It was planned since 2008 and when this all goes to civil court you will all see how it was planned. It’s my anti Developer stance that caused this.
You can have an opinion but One board member said it best “If he gets on the board I’ll sell my home”. Bob Sabota Nov 20,2008
I may not be everyone’s cup of tea but some people still believe in smaller gov’t and I am one of them.
The spending and personal attacks are not this district purpose. Singling out one person and focusing on them is what is going on. Even Dave still thinks I have lied. That still doesn’t stop me from talking to him.
I know what I have said and you can either believe it or not.
You think one board member can make others do things look at Jennifer Barber as an example.
I am Ronald Pace and I am from New England. I am loud and a bit of a pain but what you see is what you get.
Now let the election and the meet the candidate prove all those wrong.
    Thanks.

David … I am disappointed in the cartoon. It’s beneath you to attack like that.

As for Ron’s comment, he pretty much complains about everything so it’s hard to distinguish legitimate complaints from frivolous. A tooth broken on a cookie (really?? It probably would have happened at that time anyway, no matter what he was eating), supposedly broken recorder, and covenant 11 double billing. Only one of those three is worth pursuing.

I think that most people agree that the whole Filing 11 arrangement is not fair. The problem is that the fix doesn’t seem to be on the horizon any time soon. In this case, I don’t blame Ron et al for their anger over this.

Ron says, “I don’t have to explain anything to anyone.” As a candidate for the board, you DO have to explain yourself. Not only explain, but CONVINCE people that your outrage is justified and that you really can change things. As only one person on the board, you still have to convince at least two others on that board to agree with you as well. And if they don’t go along with you, are you going to threaten recall? For the past couple of years, you question and challenge the board members. It’s your right as a resident to do so. But when I, or others, question you, you call it a “smear” and “personal attack.” If you can’t take the heat, don’t get in the kitchen. These are legitimate questions based on your past behavior.

Did Ron not say in the last Thursday’s meeting that there IS NO LAWSUIT? Then why does be keep bringing up “the civil matter”? In the above posting, he says, “when this all goes to civil court.” And he complains about other people lying!

Ron says, “having a real discussion is what is lacking.” Agreed. A real discussion means sticking with the issue, presenting facts and discussing those facts. It doesn’t mean calling people names or saying you looked for board members under rocks (Ron Pace website, 9 Feb 2010).

Ron says, “The spending and personal attacks are not this district purpose.” Agreed. As I see it, the problem with spending is two-fold. No one wants their government to spend unwisely or excessively. But who decides? Just one person? No. That’s why four public budget meetings were held so the community could have input. If no one showed up (I was the only “public” at one of them), then the community is really saying they trust the board to make the right decision. A few residents who don’t agree with the budget don’t speak for everyone. Granted, the district said, “no public input.” And I think they were wrong to do so. At least one public meeting should be an open forum of budget discussions. It would prevent a whole lot of problems down the road.

That said, I think the district could do a better job of making their case when it comes to major purchases. I like the way D49 does it. Staff will present a proposed change (any kind, not just budget). They state their case in one paragraph, provide the pros and cons, and any financial implications. The board then has pretty much all the info they need to discuss the issue and make a decision. The staff member is present at the meeting to answer questions and sometimes the board directs staff to research the issue further.

  • Lynn, I am disappointed in your “responses.” It’s beneath you to argue and bicker like you do. You catch every “hook” Ron throws at you. So you put yourself on his level every time you respond to him…

    …this is great.
